Emerging from beneath the cliffs of Mount Vitorog, near the village of Pljeva, the Pliva River springs from three sources of crystal-clear water. Due to the abundance and purity of its springs, many consider it the largest source of drinking water in Europe and the most significant natural attraction of the Šipovo municipality.
The right spring gushes from a large rock at an altitude of 483 meters, while the left spring emerges from a moss-covered scree slope at 489 meters above sea level. Together with several smaller sources, they form an extraordinary natural and scenic whole that attracts numerous local and foreign visitors each year. The Pliva offers them an ideal place to rest and enjoy untouched nature.
Origin of the Water
Studies have shown that the Pliva’s water originates from the Glamoč Field and emerges beneath the steep cliffs of the Jastrebnjak and Smiljevac mountains. The river maintains a constant temperature of about 8°C, indicating a long underground journey through deep geological layers.
The Main Spring
A narrow forest path, about a 20-minute walk, leads to the most attractive spring, where crystal-clear water bursts from a large rock. To the naked eye, it appears as if the river is being born right before you. From its very beginning, the Pliva creates a series of rapids and small waterfalls, its roar echoing against the rocks and blending with birdsong to produce a magnificent symphony that clears the mind and invites visitors to surrender to the beauty of nature.
Due to the low temperature of the water, during hot summer days, mist often forms above the surface, giving the illusion that clouds have descended upon the river — creating a truly magical atmosphere that leaves no one indifferent.
Visitors reach the main spring by passing through the yard of a local family home, where the hosts kindly ask only that guests respect nature and refrain from littering.
Other Springs
The other two springs are located on the opposite side of the area, where the terrain is more accessible. Along the riverbanks, visitors can find numerous houses and cottages, as well as several preserved watermills that stand as a reminder of times past.
At the confluence of two streams lies a tourist complex covering 6,800 square meters, featuring bungalows and traditional wooden houses — a popular retreat for nature lovers and anglers who visit the area every year.
According to the Šipovo Tourist Organization, the Pliva River is distinguished by its exceptional clarity, unique color, and natural richness, offering something captivating for every visitor.
